Description
A rare moment indeed; the Supermoon of December 3, 2017, setting over Mount Williamson in the Sierra-Nevada Mountains, just as the sun was rising on the morning of December 4.
This Cold Moon is also the year’s one and only full supermoon. In other words, it comes close enough to Earth (222,443 miles or 357,987 km) to enjoy supermoon status.
This rare and beautiful moment required some planning. I had to be camped in the right location for the night, and be up and about before sunrise and before the moon sank too low. Taking a picture of the Sierra Nevada Mountains at sunrise is a challenge in itself because the Owens Valley is so deep, and there are mountains to the east that the sun has to come over first, which means the sunlight touches the top of the Sierra Mountains, rather than creeping up from the bottom. This leaves the incredible foreground of rocks and boulders in deep shadow. By the time the sun reaches the boulders, the top of the mountains are usually washed-out, with little color.
It was bitterly cold outside, with a biting wind that went right through my gloves causing my fingers to sting in pain. But it was worth it.
