Description
I found this ptarmigan along the Long's Peak trail, high above timberline. She had a brood of chicks with her, and was trying to draw me away from them. The chicks were so well hidden under various wiry grasses, I couldn't get a good picture. As I didn't want to disturb the ptarmigan too much, I didn't stick around for long, but left the mother to care for her young.
